Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle helped shape the industry as President of Stitzel-Weller Distillery during and after Prohibition. His son Julian Jr. operated the distillery until the family sold it in 1972, then created the Old Rip Van Winkle label as a side venture. Julian III rebuilt the family business starting in 1981. Buffalo Trace bought the W.L. Weller label in 1999, and beginning May 2002 has produced Van Winkle bourbons using Pappy’s exact recipe.
